Clarity, balance and impact
are the ideals that give focus to my artwork. Clarity: The intentions
of an artist should be readily comprehensible, even if the intentions
are mystery and ambiguity. Balance: The harmony and boldness of
classical proportion, color blends that engage the eye, subjects
that encompass a full range of emotions. Impact: The greatest art
is memorable and continually rewarding to the viewer.
I find the process of creativity
to be inherently inscrutable. Sometimes art is therapeutic; other
times I may have a more polemical purpose. Images arise from a mix
of moods, hopes and memories; they travel the turbulence of internal
criticism before arriving at a finished stage. Inspiration is the
greatest gift I can imagine.
My training in cartography has inspired an ongoing interest in the
visualization of information. The effective communication of abstract,
complex concepts is both an intellectual challenge and an opportunity
for aesthetic design. The goal is a happy medium of simplicity and
detail, in which the overall concept is easy to grasp but the particulars
are available upon close examination.
Information visualization promises to become increasingly important
as the quantity of data increases and more of our lives are mediated
through electronic interfaces. Globalization calls on visual design
to bridge language and education barriers. Internet technology requires
imagination and creativity in the classification and presentation
of content. Art affects technology in so many ways: humanizing it,
explaining it, even transforming it. My participation in the global
network has expanded the scope of my life; through art, I can enrich
others similarly.
